How Did 2nd Year Buckeyes Do In the NFL This Year?

Of the second year Bucks in the NFL, there were certainly some highs and lows. Terry McLaurin continued to be awesome, while Dwayne Haskins got booted from the team.

To get you oriented, these guys are from the last Urban team. (Urban Meyer is an American football coach who, many years ago, coached the Ohio State Buckeyes. Now, for some reason, he’s coaching the Jacksonville Jaguars – an alleged NFL team). With the aforementioned Haskins at QB, Urban’s final Buckeye Team went 13-1 – the sole loss a shellacking by Purdue. The Bucks were kept out of the playoff but beat Washington in the Rose Bowl and ended up ranked 3rd. You’ll remember this as the season where Clemson killed Alabama in the title game 44-16 (this was 2 years ago and I have zero recollection of that happening).

Draftees from the 2018 squad. Let’s see how they did in the Bizarro Covid World that was the 2020 NFL Season.

Nick Bosa

As a rookie in 2019 Nick was awesome and part of the squad that was up on the Chiefs in the second half of the Super Bowl before Pat Mahomes pressed the Nitrous Oxide button on his Vin Diesel car and put a stop to that shit. Nick was the Defensive Rookie of the Year, with 9 sacks, an INT, and many QB’s running for their lives.

2020 was a different story. Nick got hurt in game 2 and was done for the season. It was a torn ACL and it looks like he’ll be back in 2021.

From Spotrac, “Nick Bosa signed a 4 year, $33.5M contract with the San Francisco 49ers, including a $22.4M signing bonus, $33.5 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $8.4M.” So… he’ll be OK. According to Forbes, Nick was #85 on the list of highest paid athletes in 2020. This includes sponsorship money from Electronic Arts, Kroger, Nike, and Panini. I think Panini is the sports card dealer (paniniamerica.net) and not, like, the sandwich with grill lines on it. Career Earnings (from football contract): $24.8M.

So, hopefully Little Nicky (Joey had to call him this, right?) will be back and better than ever and in a few years the 49ers or some other team will give him a jumbo jet full of money like they did big brother Joey (5 Years, 135M. 102 MILLION GUARANTEED).

Dwayne Haskins

Dwayne was the 15th overall pick for the Washington Football Team and was a local guy so it was a match made in heaven.

In 16 total games for Washington over the last 2 seasons, Dwayne had 12 TD’s and 14 INT’s. 2800 yards. For a guy that threw 50 TD’s in a season – one of the best QB seasons in the history of college football – it was weird that he didn’t seem to be able to throw the ball downfield.

On Dec 28th of this year, Washington released Haskins. What does this mean for Haskins’ 4 year, 14+ million contract he signed a year and a half ago? Well, he’s made 10M already and it looks like he’s owed another 4 million unless they use the clause in the contract that says it’s void if Dwayne fucks shit up (paraphrasing). From the Sporting News: In the past week, Haskins was involved with reported maskless attendance at a strip club, a $40K fine, being stripped of his WFT captaincy, being benched and now finally being released. So maybe that qualifies.

Anyway. Dwayne has signed a reserve/future contract with the Steelers. Good luck Dwayne! Hope you invested some of that cash… Career earnings: $14.4M.

Parris Campbell

Parris was the 59th pick in the draft. When you catch 90 of Dwayne Haskins’ 373 completed passes in a single season, you’ll get picked pretty high in the draft!

He signed a 4 year, $4.7M contract with the Indianapolis Colts, including a $1.5M signing bonus, $2.2M guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $1.2M. Career earnings: $2.7M.

Parris has been unlucky. He has 1 TD and 198 yards in 2 seasons. As a rookie, he had a broken foot, a sports hernia and a broken hand. And then in game 2 of his 2nd year he tore his left knee apart and was put on the Injured Reserve. So that sucks. And, to start off 2021, he slipped outside his front door, caught the video on a doorbell camera, and sent it out on social media. As far as we know he didn’t hurt himself any further!

Dre’mont Jones

Jones was the 71st pick and went to the Broncos.

He signed a 4 year, $4.1M contract with the Denver Broncos, including a $1M signing bonus, $1M guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $1M. Career Earnings $2.25M.

And, he’s playing great! According to Pro Football Focus, Jones saw his overall grade jump from 66.9 in 2019 to 74.7 overall in 2020, grading him out as the 21st-ranked defensive tackle in the NFL out of 128 qualified in PFF’s metrics. That’s pretty good. Right?

In 27 career games, Jones has 10 sacks, 55 tackles, and an interception. He started 8 games this season and seemed to be playing his best at the end of the year. If you’d like a breakdown of each sack he had this year, there is, for some reason, a very in depth article about it.

Terry McLaurin

Picked 17 spots behind Parris Campbell, our guy Terry has had much different freshman and sophomore seasons. Despite an absolute shit show at the QB position, McLaurin has over 2000 yards in 2 seasons and 11 TD catches.

QB’s in 2019 and 2020 for the Washington “Professional” Football Team: Case Keenum, Dwayne Haskins, Colt McCoy, Alex Smith, Kyle Allen, Chance McEnanany, and Taylor Heinicke. That’s quite a group – and only one of those names is fake. One dude had 39 (87? Who knows?) surgeries on his leg. One dude played in their only playoff game and looked sort of good and got a 2-year deal out of it. Haskins leads this group in completions and TD’s but is apparently such a bad teammate they kicked him off the team. It’s amazing Terry did anything. Indeed, per pro football talk, Terry was the first receiver in NFL history to start his career with 3 straight games of 5 catches + a TD in each game. Turns out he’s just really good.

As a Buckeye: 75 catches, 1250 yards, and 19 TD’s. As a senior he was at 20 yards per catch as one of Dwayne’s deep threats.

Per spotrac, Terry McLaurin signed a 4 year, $3.8M contract with the Washington (Racial Slurs), including a $1M signing bonus, $1M guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $961,918. He also signed a deal with Nike in 2019 before his rookie season. I need a database of all endorsement deals for all athletes. Does that exist? How could Terry be making any money off of a deal he signed with Nike after being a 3rd round draft pick? Before he proved he was good? Anyway, Terry’s the man and we all hope Taylor Heinicke is good and will throw him a few touchdowns and whatnot. Career Earnings: $2.2M.

Kendall Sheffield

Sheffield is a cornerback I barely remember. Picked 111th, in 2 seasons with the Falcons, he’s played in 29 games and has 97 tackles.

In high school, Sheffield was an awesome hurdler, coming in 2nd in his division in Texas (as a sophomore) in the 110M Hurdles. 13.85 seconds. This is very fast, but I watched the race and he got absolutely smoked by a guy named Tony Brown, who later went with Sheffield to Alabama and is currently on the Bengals. Brown ran a 13.40, which is fast. As a junior, Sheffield won the 110M and 300M hurdles, running 13.63 and 36.34, respectively. And then as a senior, he won the 110’s in 13.42. He was on the Alabama Track and Field Roster for 2015/2016. I need to add Sheffield to the awesome track guys list with Ted Ginn and Ken-Yon Rambo. I think Brian Hartline’s on that list. I’ll work on the list.

As mentioned, Sheffield went to Alabama, redshirted as a freshman, and then transferred. But he didn’t go straight to OSU. First he transferred to Blinn College… ? A community college in Texas. Sheffield is on their list of notable alumni. They have a football team and I found his stats! 2016 is blank on his college football reference page. No respect for Blinn College!! Finally in 2017, Sheffield arrived at OSU. He played in 27 games over 2 seasons, had a couple picks and a bunch of passes defended, and went pro.

Per spotrac, Sheffield signed a 4 year, $3.2M contract with the Atlanta Falcons, including a $757K signing bonus, $757K guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $819K.  Career Earnings: $2.2M

Shout out to Kendall Sheffield, my new favorite former buckeye!

Michael Jordan

Michael primarily played center at OSU, but is playing guard in the pros, and was drafted 136th overall by the Bengals. Playing for the Chicago Bulls in 1997, Mike made 33 million dollars. Crazy.

Anyway, per spotrac, Mike signed a 4 year, $3M contract with the Cincinnati Bengals, including a $488K signing bonus, $488K guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $752K. Career Earnings: $1.9M.

Be Like Mike has played in 27 games in his 2 years – 1378 offensive snaps. Is that good? Well, he’s playing anyway. Protect your former teammate, Buckeye Great Joe Burrow! According to CincyJungle.com, Mike got Burrow hurt and is the worst human being to ever exist on the face of the earth. That’s the vibe I got anyway.

Isaiah Prince

The 202nd pick at Offensive Tackle to the Bengals. Isaiah played a few games in 2019 and it doesn’t look like he played in 2020. But he made 150K anyway. Pretty good gig if you can get it.

Prince signed a 4 year, $2.6M contract with the Miami Dolphins, including a $150K signing bonus, $150K guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $667K. Career earnings: $794K.

The main thing you need to know about Isaiah is that he defeated the Michigan Wolverines 4 times. And also I accidentally ended up on the stats page for a guy named Prince McJunkins, the best name I’ve ever heard. He ran for 2000 yards over 4 seasons at Wichita State. The more you know.

Mike Weber

Pick number 218! Mike is a running back who was drafted by the Cowboys and was on their practice squad in 2019. He ended up on the Chiefs practice squad and he’s now part of the Green Bay Packers. He’s been on the active roster for 2 games. Career earnings: $369K.

As a buckeye, Mike had almost 3000 rushing and receiving yards in his 3 seasons and 25 TD’s. This is great considering he had a few injuries and also because JK Dobbins showed up and was immediately the top guy. Mike is 16th all-time in Buckeye history in rushing, just behind Antonio Pittman and Boom Herron.

OK that’s it. These are interesting representatives of a super fun Buckeye team. 50 TD’s from Haskins in his one season at the controls! The best college football fact of all time continues to be that in successive seasons JT Barrett’s backup QB’s (Haskins and Joe Burrow) had 2 of the greatest seasons ever in college football.
