Korey Stringer
Season Recap: A 9-4 season. The wins came against just one ranked team, Michigan (No 15, who would finish 8-4 with a final ranking of 12 after a bowl win over No 10 Colorado State). The Buckeye losses were to 3 ranked teams:
- No 25 Washington, who would finish 7-4, unranked.
- An absolute beatdown against #1 Penn State.
- And a loss to #6 Alabama.
- The fourth loss was a
terrible24-10 loss to unranked Illinois in the shoe… record scratch… freeze frame… So, listen… Illinois was good in ’94. They lost 5 games by a total of 22 points. Details: A 5-point loss to #11 Michigan and a 4-point loss to #2 Penn State. (Penn State beat us 63-14! By 7 touchdowns!). The Illini were 4th nationally in points allowed per game. I don’t really know what DVOA means, but I think their DVOA would have been pretty solid. Anyway, aside from Washington, the teams that beat us were good.
Michigan: A win! #22 bucks take out #15 Michigan. Scoring starts off with the Michigan QB tripping over his own feet in the end zone for a Buckeye safety. And it’s all downhill from there. We block a field goal, get huge defensive stops, and look quite good. Coop now 1-5-1 against those sons of bitches (apologies, Michigan got a win in the 2021 matchup and think they own us now so everyone’s a little feisty).
Bowl: Lost to #6 Bama 24-17. Bama finished 12-1 and lost by 1 in the SEC Championship game to Florida. Penn State went 12-0 including a rose bowl win over Oregon, but were voted 2nd place in the polls. Nebraska was voted #1. Penn State was robbed! (Wait, hold on, let me check really quick… ahh yes Jerry Sandusky was their defensive coordinator in 1994 and 1994-2009 was the time frame covered by the grand jury investigation where he was charged with CHILD RAPE). Correction: Penn State was not robbed and should be launched into the fucking sun.
Awards: Orlando Pace – Big 10 Freshman of the Year. Shout out to Mr. Pace – best FB player in Buckeye history.
- All Big 10 – Korey Stringer (OL), Joey Galloway (WR), Matt Finkes (DL), Mike Vrabel (DL), Lorenzo Styles (LB), Marlon Kerner (DB), Scott Terna (P).
- All American: Stringer (consensus), Matt Finkes.
Quarterbacks: Bobby Hoying takes pretty much all the snaps this year although the Stanley Jackson / Coach Coop love affair appears to begin. And Tom Hoying takes a couple snaps!
Running Backs: Eddie goes for 1400 yards and 12 TD’s in his Heisman warmup season. Pepe Pearson, Jermon Jackson, and continuing the theme of guys with awesome names – Nicky Sualua. Watching a few highlights from the Michigan game, I would have assumed Sualua was the best player in the world. Just dragging dudes all over the place.
WR/TE: Joey Galloway with lots of catches and 7 TD’s, Chris Sanders with 8 TD’s. Buster Tillman and Rickey Dudley also had receiving TD’s. Terry Glenn and Dimitrious Stanley didn’t do too much but they’re ready to go nuts next year.
Other Offense – Orlando Pace and Korey Stringer are on the same team.
Defensive Line: Fickell and his bloody-ass nose.
LB/DB: Greg Bellisari, Shawn Springs
Drafted:
- Joey Galloway (WR) – 8th overall pick to the Seahawks. A 16-year NFL career. 198 games played. (NFL All-time Rankings from forever ago when I started writing this…) 701 receptions (49th all time). 10950 yards (37th all time). 77 TD’s (32nd all time). Also 500 yards rushing and a TD. Six 1000-yard receiving seasons. 5 punt return TD’s. From Bellaire, OH. Career leader in yards and TD’s for a player never selected to a pro bowl. A dubious honor. 100 and 200-meter champ in high school in 1990 for Bellaire. Oh, and was All Ohio in Basketball. Post-playing career is on some of ESPN’s college football shows. Still looks like he could run really fast, right?
- Korey Stringer (OT) – 24th overall pick to the Vikings. Korey Stringer was awesome. Played in 93 games in 6 years and went to the pro bowl in 2000, his final season. He died in training camp for the 2001 season of heat stroke. The NFL has apparently learned its lesson and football players are no longer encouraged to work out until they die. His death is bullshit and they can go fuck themselves. He was 27 years old.
- Craig Powell (LB) – 30th overall – Browns. Powell played in 14 NFL games over 3 seasons and recorded 2 tackles. And… not sure what he’s up to.
- Chris Sanders (WR) – 67th overall – Houston Oilers. Sanders had a solid NFL career with 177 catches and 3285 yards. His 23.5 YPC as a rookie led the NFL. He also apparently has the record for fewest career rushing yards (4 rushes for -36 yards). Played in 97 games over 7 years, all for the Oilers/Titans. MORE IMPORTATLY, he set the school record at OSU in the long jump – 26ft, 9 and ¾ inches. That’s a touch longer than the 1935 world record set by Jesse Owens (which, awesomely, happened in Ann Arbor Michigan). Owens’ world record stood until 1960. Pretty good company for Mr Sanders. He was also on some track relay teams. Chris was the 1994 OSU athlete of the year for his football + track prowess. Also, his son CJ is an actor – playing young Ray Charles in the movie Ray. CJ was also on Six Feet Under and Grey’s Anatomy. Pretty wild. CJ is also a kick returner… he went to Notre Dame for 3 seasons and then transferred to SMU. For his career he had 5 Kick Return TDs, 1 Punt return TD, and 2 receiving TD’s. And, Wikipedia tells me he has a charitable foundation. Who the hell is this dude? I’m not finding any pro football info on him. But he got his business degree at Notre Dame and his masters and SMU, so I think he’ll be OK.
- Marlon Kerner (DB) – 76th – Bills. Kerner, from Brookhaven here in Columbus, played in the league for 4 seasons – 43 games for Buffalo. 3 INT’s, a forced fumble, and 72 tackles. He still lives in Buffalo and it looks like his son is good at track. Love it.
- Lorenzo Styles (LB) – 77th – Falcons. One of the better names in history. Played in 70 games for the Falcons and Rams over 6 seasons. 94 tackles. Super Bowl Champ with the Rams. Coached at Ohio Dominican, for the Marion Mayhem, the Dayton Silverbacks and was head coach for the Marion Blue Racers in 2012. As we know, Arena football doesn’t work, so that ended. He’s been coaching at Pickerington here in Columbus and his son, Lorenzo Jr, caught the winning TD in the 2019 State Championship game. Lorenzo Jr now plays at Notre Dame. Amazing! . Also, Lorenzo’s little brother, Sonny, has turned into a top recruit and will be a Buckeye next year, fall 2022. Sonny re-classified, meaning he’s leaving Pickerington a year early and getting started on his Buckeye career as a 17 year old. We play Notre Dame to kick off the 2022 season – but it’s unlikely Sonny will get on the field so quickly.
- Preston Harrison (LB) – 98th – Chargers. A star QB from South High in Columbus. Harrison never ended up playing in the NFL, but he did have an impact here in town. I’m just going to liberally quote from this article in the dispatch…
Still proclaiming his innocence, a former Ohio State University football player was sentenced on Tuesday to seven years in prison for defrauding friends and acquaintances out of millions of dollars.
Preston Harrison, 43, showed no emotion as U.S. District Judge Gregory L. Frost wondered aloud why a man with such a promising future had allowed “pure greed” to undermine his life and the lives of others.
Their company, Imperial Integrative Health Research & Development, produced the sports drink OXYwater from 2010 to 2012. But investors became suspicious when Harrison and Jackson wouldn’t answer questions about where their money was going, prompting a federal fraud investigation by the Internal Revenue Service and the FBI.
- Preston apparently stole almost 10 million dollars, Bernie Madoff-ing that shit into the sports drink “OXYwater.” I think I had an OXYwater or 2 back in the day. Included in that group were “several professional basketball players and R&B singer-songwriter Ne-Yo (emphasis mine, lol). I tried to figure out who the basketball players were… one is Kenny Gregory (Independence High, Kansas Jayhawks). Kenny G and Ne-Yo both testified at trial. Note… It was actually Ne-Yo’s business manager, Kevin Foster, who induced him to invest. And then he just took another 1.5M from Ne-Yo and invested again and then took out fraud credit lines. ALLEGEDLY. (Highland County Press). So, Preston didn’t just call up Ne-Yo and get him to invest. But still, what the hell.
Tito Paul (DB) – 167th – Cardinals. Another one of the better names in history. Tito played in 67 games over 5 seasons for the Cardinals, Bengals, Broncos, and Washington. Super Bowl champ with the Broncos in ’98! Career 1 INT, 3 Fumble Recoveries, 109 tackles. And it looks like he’s a State Farm insurance agent in Delaware, OH.
Great work everyone – we did it.
